Calgary Civic Symphony

Spring is in the Air

It’s SPRING in Calgary, and to put everyone in the right frame of mind, this concert will open with Vivaldi’s “Spring” from “The Four Seasons” violin concerto featuring our own Concertmaster Maria van der Sloot! Once the stage is set, we will feature two past winners of the Rotary Calgary Concerto Competition, young musicians in the spring of their years.  Pianist Carolyn Dratnal will play Edward MacDowell’s “Piano Concerto No. 2 in D minor, Op. 23”; and pianist Eric Shan will play Sergei Prokofiev’s “Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major, Op. 26”.  The second half of our program will open with the three movements of the “Trittico Botticelliano” each of which take their inspiration from a different painting by Sandro Botticelli, renowned artist of the Italian Renaissance. The first and third are likely familiar: La primavera (Spring) and La nascita di Venere (The Birth of Venus). The middle part of the triptych, “L’adorazione dei Magi”, is more traditional, with its subject from the Book of Matthew.  Following Respighi, the Orchestra will delight with "Wo die Zitronen blühen", Op. 364, a waltz by Johann Strauss II written in 1874; and the program will close with Strauss’s “Voices of Spring”.

Maestro Rolf Bertsch conducts The Calgary Civic Symphony in our tribute to the awakening year.

The Calgary Civic Symphony was founded in 1975 as Calgary’s volunteer orchestra. Over the years, the Civic has swelled to over 80 musicians. With an interesting diversity in professions, its members come together each week to rehearse complex orchestral works. Under the baton of Artistic Director and Conductor Rolf Bertsch, the Symphony shapes and polishes performances that are truly brilliant!
