Join the Calgary Civic Symphony and the winners of the last two Cliburn International Amateur Piano Competitions for this voyage to the exciting and exotic ports of the Mediterranean!
Beginning with Ibert’s colourful and evocative Escales (Ports of Call), this concert takes you to Rome and Palermo, Tunis and Nefta, Valencia, and Egypt.
The concert features two of the world’s most brilliant amateur pianists – Thomas Yu, performing Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto No. 5 “Egyptian”, which he captured first prize in the 2016 Cliburn International Amateur Piano Competition. and Jon Lee, who won the most recent competition in 2022, performing Ravel Piano Concerto in G major.
The concert closes with one of the most spectacular works in the repertoire, Respighi’s Pines of Rome.
