CCOC presents a concert in support of FearIsNotLove - “Raising our Voices to Help Change the Conversation” Tuesday JUNE 13th, 2023 at the Cardel Theatre at 7:00pm (doors open at 6:00pm)
ABOUT FearIsNotLove:
Formerly known as the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter, this new name reflects more accurately the importance and impact of the work they do for the community. Those affected by domestic violence and abuse in our community can find hope and help from FearIsNotLove, a front-line organization. “Taking a Stand Against Family Violence” since 1974, this agency has helped over 240,000 Calgarians build safe lives and healthy relationships.
WHY “Fear Is Not Love" is so important to Barbara and Chris (founders of CCOC)
Barbara's ex-husband verbally abused and threatened her for 3 years, but on April 2, 2008, he hit her on the neck, causing both bodily and psychological damage. Barbara managed to get away and return to her parents' home where she recovered by going to physical therapy. Despite this, Barbara still required emotional assistance. This is when the police informed her of the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter counsellors.
“The counsellors gave me the right tools needed to help me gain my strength back." "My voice healed well, but my inner strength was still lacking, and I found myself constantly crying and terrified. The counsellors supported me and got to work on my path to mental health recovery".
Barbara was able to make use of strategies that assisted her in positively moving on with her life as an opera singer, and avoiding entering into another abusive relationship, thanks to ongoing counselling for three years. Barbara has been happily married to Chris for 9 years and they proudly own Calgary Concert Opera Company.
