The concert features Eric Satie’s Ludions from 1923 as a companion to the premiere performance of William Jordan’s Gertrude Stein Shenanigans, featuring Laura Hynes (coloratura) and Sandra Joy Friesen (piano). Composed in 2018 for Hynes, the Shenanigans consists of thirteen concert arias with texts drawn from Stein’s Stanzas in Meditation, as well as her The Geographical History of America.
Laura Hynes has been described as a “ten-thousand megawatt coloratura.” She has performed opera roles, early music, new music, and art song recitals across Europe and North America, and has most recently collaborated with the renowned Land’s End Ensemble as part of Calgary’s new Sound Atlas Festival.
Pianist Sandra Joy Friesen is known for her sensitive and virtuosic performances of contemporary works, and for interdisciplinary collaborations with visual art and musical improvisation. She has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout North America, as well as in Austria, Brazil, England, France, Germany, Poland, and Slovenia.
