Calgary’s Juno-nominated, professional chamber choir Luminous Voices opens its 10th season with a thrilling concert of unaccompanied favourites from past seasons along with two new works!
The concert will open, as it did 10 years ago, with Curse Upon Iron by Estonian composer Veljo Tormis using everything from myths and chants to the sounds of air raid sirens. With an overarching theme of war & peace, the choir will also feature virtuoso a cappella music from Eric Whitacre's When David Heard and Joby Talbot’s Path of Miracles, to Frank Martin’s Mass for Double Choir and Alessandro Pizzetti’s Requiem. The choir will also perform James MacMillan's Who Shall Separate Us? which premiered at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
Luminous Voices continues its tradition of commissioning and performing music by Canadian composers. This program will feature the premiere of Weepe you, no more by Calgary's own Arthur Bachmann (his first work for unaccompanied choir) and a short excerpt from Zachary Wadsworth’s The Far West, commissioned by James and Elaine Hutchinson in 2014.
“I can't believe it's already been 10 years!” says Timothy Shantz, Founder & Artistic Director of Luminous Voices. "The past 10 years have flown by. What an incredible musical journey of growth and refinement it has been for myself and our entire ensemble. We have shared the stage with incredible artists from singers and instrumentalists to composers and dancers. We have brought more than fifteen new works into the world and have released 4 recordings with a fifth arriving in March 2023. It amazes me how our community continues to grow and evolve from enthusiastic performers to volunteers, patrons and supporters. I am grateful for our entire Luminous community of music lovers who support classical choral music both new and old. Come hear us in performance on November 6th. Our choir is ready to move you with our voices!"
