Silent movie with live organ accompaniment

What better way to celebrate Halloween than a rare screening of the 1925 silent horror film, The Phantom of the Opera? Experience this silent film with LIVE accompaniment, improvised in real-time on the massive 5,018-pipe Casavant organ at Knox United Church. The 110-year-old organ is one of the largest pipe organs in Canada!

This annual Halloween event is presented by the Calgary Centre of the Royal Canadian College of Organists and Knox United Church.

“We are excited to bring back British concert organist and improviser Ed Norman to the console,” says Chellan Hoffman, organist at Knox United Church. "He blew the goblins out of the rafters in 2019, so we know 2022 is going to be another spook-tacular event!”

The Phantom of the Opera is a 1925 American silent horror film starring Lon Chaney in the title role of the deformed Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House, causing murder and mayhem in an attempt to make the woman he loves a star.

Live organ accompaniments used to be common at the movies. And just like the old days, Mr. Norman will play and improvise non-stop during the entire film.

Join the decomposing musicians for a pre-show at 7:30 PM. G.H.O.S.T. (Great Halloween Organ SpookTacular) is a family-friendly variety show of v-eerie spooky pipe organ music, groaning humour, and some Gothic Rock’n'Roll.

The Calgary Centre of the Royal Canadian College of Organists (RCCO) was formed to serve the needs of the College and its membership in Southern Alberta. These include maintaining and fostering high standards of organ playing and choir performance in our churches, uniting organists in sharing mutual interest, presenting organ concerts, workshops and recitals.
