Bach Cello Suites on Baroque Cello

Come experience the Bach cello suite as it was heard in the days of Bach

For one day only, Philip Hansen, former principal cellist of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, is back in Calgary from Brazil to present a solo cello recital.

Called “a master cellist” by the Calgary Herald, Philip's intensely personal and colourful playing is showcased in performances from baroque to jazz and in every major work written for solo cello with orchestra. Philip has been performing extensively throughout Brazil, where he has been principal cellist of the Orquestra Filarmônica de Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte since 2016.

In this recital, Philip will perform J.S. Bach’s suites for solo cello – among the most emotionally intense pieces in the Baroque repertoire. He will perform the suites No. 3, 4, and 5 – the remainder of the Bach Suites after performing No. 1, 2 & 6 in January 2019. And he will perform these suites entirely on the Baroque cello.

The cello that we play today is not the same cello that Bach or Handel once used. The Baroque cello was played in large halls made of stone and with little material to absorb the sound, and the room itself acted to amplify the sound. Come experience the Bach cello suite as it was heard in the days of Bach.

The recital takes place on Sunday, January 15 at St. Stephen's Anglican Church (1121 - 14 Avenue SW, Calgary). Tickets are $20 (general admission) and are available online through showpass.com or at the door (cash only).
