Calgary’s professional chamber choir, Luminous Voices, finishes its 2022-23 season with Bach Mass in B Minor on Friday, April 7, 2023 at the Bella Concert Hall.
Luminous Voices will again collaborate with the 2023 JUNO-winner Claude LaPalme and Rosa Barocca in this full baroque performance highlighting the intimacy and grandeur of Bach’s great masterpiece. The audience will hear the range of Bach’s mastery through the stunning solos, duets, trios and full chorus along with the incredible intimacy and magnificence of his orchestration. With its technical skill and virtuosity displayed by Luminous Voices and its soloists Hannah Pagenkopf (soprano), Sara Staples (mezzo-soprano), Patricia Thompson (mezzo-soprano), Aoife Bonaventura (alto) and Celia Lee (alto), it will be a musical journey the audience will never forget. They will also be joined by guest soloists Zach Finkelstein (tenor) and Sumner Thompson (baritone).
Completed in the last years of Bach’s life and existed only as a collection of itinerant manuscripts, Bach never heard the Mass performed in its entirety. The entire work was not performed until 1859, more than a century after Bach died. It is regarded as one of the finest choral works in history.
Bach Bass in B Minor will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 7, 2023 at the Bella Concert Hall, Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts, Mount Royal University (18 Mount Royal Circle SW, Calgary).
