On Tuesday, October 10, Early Music Voices opens its 2023-24 Season with the harmonious blend of Eastern and Western musical traditions, with Montreal's renowned ensemble, Constantinople.
Taking its name from the historic city that bridged East and West, Constantinople was established in 2001 in Montreal under the leadership of its artistic director, Kiya Tabassian. The ensemble encourages cross-cultural musical making and exchanges among artists from around the world.
Entitled “Bach & Khayyam”, Constantinople will feature arrangements of J.S. Bach's most captivating spiritual songs and arias, intertwined with the poetic verses of Omar Khayyam, sung in Persian. This concert fosters a dialogue between these two legendary artists, where spirituality and the sacred dissolve boundaries.
Performers will include: Hana Blažíková as soprano, Kiya Tabassian on setar and voice leading the ensemble, Didem Basar on kanun, Neva Özgen with the kemenche, Tineke Steenbrink on organ, Johanna Rose playing viola da gamba , Tanya LaPerrière on baroque violin and viola d’amore, Michel Angers with the theorbo, and Patrick Graham on percussion.
This concert will also mark the start of Constantinople's Canadian tour. With their tour set to include performances in Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City, Constantinople is thrilled to offer the Calgary audience an unforgettable musical journey, opening minds with their unparalleled artistry.
