Carmina Burana Collaboration

Luminous Voices presents Carnima Burana with the Honens

Calgary's professional chamber choir, Luminous Voices, is set to dazzle audiences with the start of their 2023-24 season, presenting a dazzling performance of Carl Orff’s classic, Carmina Burana. This special performance will take place on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at 3 p.m. in the Bella Concert Hall.

The chamber version of the work is made even more special through a collaboration with the Honens Piano Competition. The concert will feature the 2022 Honens finalist, Sasha Kasman Laude, and her father, the distinguished Yakov Kasman. Yakov, a well-recognized figure in the world of music, boasts an impressive profile as a performer, professor, and a piano pedagogue.

The magnificent piano duo will be complemented by the dynamic rhythms and timbres of a percussion section, composed of six outstanding Calgary percussionists. Adding layers to this multifaceted musical tapestry are the esteemed soloists, Laura Brandt, soprano, and Jin Yu, baritone. The young and captivating voices from the Cantiga of the Cantaré Children's Choir will also infuses the performance with vitality and energy.

Carmina Burana, a scenic cantata composed by Carl Orff between 1935 and 1936, draws its inspiration from 24 evocative poems from the medieval collection bearing the same name. Often recognized by its powerful opening and closing choral movements, O Fortuna, its bold rhythms, dynamic contrasts, and stirring choruses have made it a staple in the choral repertoires.

We are excited to launch our next decade with a stunning array of guest artists,” says Tim Shantz, Luminous Voices’ Artistic Director. “This concert marks our first collaboration with the Honens Piano Competition and we couldn't be happier to work with one of last year's finalists Sasha Kasman Laude along with her father Yakov who was a semi-finalist in one of the first Honens competitions! Our audience will also be transported by the singing of soprano Laura Brandt and baritone Jin Yu! The percussion section will blow you away and the expanded choir will be bringing everything they have to this concert that also features unaccompanied works by Mendelssohn. We are excited to share our opening concert of the season with you!”

Now celebrating the 11th season, Calgary’s professional chamber choir Luminous Voices unites local, national, and international artists and organizations through exceptional sonic experiences. With Artistic Director Timothy Shantz, this unique mixture of artists emcompasses live and virtual performances, recordings, workshops, and community educational activities.
