Calgary's cultural scene is set to be enriched by a special musical experience as Kensington Sinfonia, the city's original string ensemble, presents Heart's Wellspring. This special performance is a celebration of talent, collaboration, and the boundless energy of Calgary's future classical music stars. The concert promises a captivating blend of masterpieces, showcasing both seasoned musicians from Kensington Sinfonia and the emerging talents of the Amici String Program's string students.
At the heart of this extraordinary program is Silver City by beloved Calgary composer George Fenwick, who passed away in 2020 at the young age of 56. The solo part will be performed with remarkable finesse by young violinist Chanan Ngo, the winner of the 2023 Rose Bowl at the Calgary Performing Arts Festival. Ngo also recorded the piece with the Sinfonia for their latest album, Forces of Nature, which was released in 2023. Ngo’s interpretation promises to bring Fenwick's composition to life, captivating the audience with a combination of technical brilliance and emotional depth.
Adding a touch of British classical brilliance to the evening, the programme includes the exquisite Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis by Ralph Vaughan Williams, which will be led by a quartet of talented musicians from the Amici String Program – violinists Ben Linton and Aedan Lowry, joined by Ngo on viola and Matthew Craig on cello. Together, they will lead the audience through the captivating soundscape of Vaughan Williams' masterful composition.
Diversifying the program, the concert will feature the vibrant African Suite by Fela Sewande, a prominent figure in Nigerian art music. This lively and rhythmic piece reflects the cultural richness of African musical traditions, creating a dynamic contrast within the overall program.
Breaking new ground, the concert will also present the Canadian premiere of Petite Symphonie by the young and exciting American composer Quinn Mason. Mason's work has been gaining recognition for its fresh perspective and innovative approach to classical composition. The inclusion of Petit Symphonie not only adds a contemporary flair to the evening but also introduces the audience to the evolving landscape of classical music.
The collaboration between Kensington Sinfonia and Amici Strings is a testament to the commitment of Calgary's musical community to nurturing and showcasing the talents of emerging artists. This unique pairing provides a platform for young musicians to collaborate with seasoned professionals, fostering a sense of mentorship and camaraderie within the city's classical music scene. As the notes resonate in the air, the audience will undoubtedly be transported on a musical journey, guided by the skillful hands of both seasoned musicians and the promising stars of tomorrow.
