A Musical Voyage to Spain

Embark on a musical journey to Spain as the Calgary Civic Symphony presents "España!" - an afternoon filled with sultry nights and irresistible rhythms.

At the heart of the performance lies the mesmerizing "Concierto de Aranjuez" by Joaquín Rodrigo, a brilliant Spanish composer. Despite being blind from the age of three, Rodrigo crafted his music in Braille, with the invaluable assistance of his wife, Victoria, in translating it to traditional notation. Remarkably, he never played the guitar himself, yet he gifted the world with one of the most iconic guitar concertos of all time. Experience the beauty, complexity, and versatility of the classical guitar as virtuoso guitarist Iliana Matos brings Rodrigo's masterpiece to life.

But the allure of Spanish music doesn't stop there. The orchestra will also feature Manuel de Falla's timeless masterpiece, "The Three-Cornered Hat." Falla, one of the most distinguished Spanish composers of the 20th century, captured the very soul of Spain in his music. Influenced by the composing styles of Debussy, Dukas, and Ravel during his time in Paris, de Falla's compositions are a blend of poetry and asceticism that epitomizes the spirit of his homeland.

Adding to the allure of the afternoon is the spellbinding voice of soprano Andrea Hill, who will interpret Montsalvatge's "Cinco canciones negras" with unparalleled emotion and depth. The programme also includes Falla's evocative "La vida breve: Interlude & Dance."

Under the baton of Artistic Director Rolf Bertsch, the Calgary Civic Symphony promises an unforgettable afternoon celebrating the vibrant spirit of Spain through its enchanting melodies and irresistible rhythms. Come and immerse yourself in the captivating sounds of Spain.

"España!" takes place on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. at the Jack Singer Concert Hall, Arts Commons,
