The University of Calgary’s annual Graduate Music Society Conference invites participants to explore the intricate relationship between time and music, with this year's theme, "The Bounds of Time." At the heart of music lies a profound connection to time—a concept both universal and deeply personal. Musicians, scholars, and enthusiasts alike are invited to explore the multifaceted nature of temporal perception within music.
Throughout the conference, attendees will ponder the influence of time on musical expression, cultural traditions, and emotional resonance. Keynote speaker Dr. Jeremy Brown from the University of Calgary (Professor of Music), alongside invited speakers Dr. Vincent Ho (University of Calgary alumnus/composer) and Sir N. Antonio Peruch (University of Calgary Sessional Instructor) will guide participants through thought-provoking discussions on this captivating theme. Additionally, a roundtable discussion featuring Dr. Kristin Flores (University of Calgary alumna/composer) and Dr. Laurie Radford (University of Calgary Professor of Music/composer) will offer diverse perspectives on the interplay of time and music.
The conference will also feature a myriad of other brilliant presenters including Bert Johnson, Maria Mirakhmedova, James Watson, Shea Iles, Ryan Baxter, Penny Sunburn, and Dr. Merlin Thompson.
This year's conference will take place both in-person at the Rozsa Centre and virtually via Zoom, ensuring accessibility for participants worldwide. From paper presentations to lecture-recitals, attendees will engage with cutting-edge research and artistic expressions that push the boundaries of musical temporality.
Join the exploration of the rhythm of time and music, transcending expectations and embracing the infinite possibilities that lie within "The Bounds of Time."
