Introducing Calgary's Newest Orchestra

Prepare for a night of classical elegance as the St. Giles Orchestra, Calgary's newest orchestra, brings Mozart and Mendelssohn to life in its inaugural concert. Set to take place on Wednesday, October 30, at 7 p.m., this concert promises an intimate and moving experience for Calgary’s classical music lovers.

The evening will begin with Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat Major for violin, viola, and orchestra —a masterful blend of Mozart’s signature elegance and complexity. This piece weaves an intricate dialogue between the violin and viola, enriched by the orchestra’s full, resonant sound. Calgary Phil musicians Hyewon Grillet-Kim (violin) and Laurent Grillet-Kim (viola) will perform as featured soloists.

In honour of the Reformation Day the following day, the second half of the concert will feature Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 in D Minor, “Reformation”, an expressive symphony celebrating faith and resilience, filled with lush, dynamic orchestration and an uplifting final movement inspired by the hymn “Ein feste Burg.”

The orchestra is led by Artistic Director and Conductor Jeongmin Park, who is also known for his talents as an exceptional violinist and violist, professional whistler, and piano technician.

With 45 accomplished philharmonic musicians coming together for this special occasion, the performance promises to deliver an evening of remarkable artistry and passion. United by their love for classical music, these talented musicians bring skill and dedication, seeking to create an atmosphere of connection, inspiration, and harmony for the audience.

The venue, St. Giles Presbyterian Church, offers seating for just 250 guests, ensuring an intimate setting where the music can be experienced in close proximity, enhancing its emotional impact. With all ticket proceeds supporting the church’s community outreach efforts, this concert combines artistry with a meaningful cause, offering patrons an opportunity to support ongoing community programs.

Tickets are priced at $45, and early arrival is recommended to enjoy the ambiance and grab a good seat.

Don’t miss this chance to experience the magic of Mozart and Mendelssohn and see the newest orchestra in town.
